The Faculty of Arts,
Ljubljana, hosted on 29 November 2007 a roundtable on the topic "What
will the new legislation on combating domestic violence bring?". The
roundtable was organized in cooperation between the Department of
Sociology at the Faculty of Arts and the Section for Gender Issues at
the Slovenian Sociological Society. Invited guests were:
1. Majda Erzar, Directress-General of the Directorate
for Family, Ministry of Labour, Family and Social Affairs
2. Zdenka Čebašek Travnik, PhD, Human Rights
Ombudswoman
3. Tanja Salecl, Directress of the Office for Equal
Opportunities
4. Katja Filipčič, PhD, lecturer at the Faculty of Law
5. Mojca Urek, PhD, lecturer at the Faculty of Social
Work
6. Špela Veselič, SOS Telephone Society
7. Roman Kuhar, PhD, The Peace Institute.
With the roundtable the Faculty of Arts joined the worldwide campaign 16
Days of Activism against Gender Violence (25 November–10 December). At
the same time it wanted to draw attention to the research project "Ways
of Implementing the EU Directives on Violence against Women, Children
and Youth: Good Practices and Recommendations," which is financed
through the Daphne Programme.
The roundtable was chaired by Daphne Project Senior Leader Milica Antić
Gaber, PhD. In the participants' opinion, the new legislation is quite
promising but there is still the pending issue of implementation. The
issues raised during the debate were the question of obligation to
report an act of violence and the question of how to motivate abusers to
take up resocialisation programmes.
