Prof. Dr. Roman Kuhar

Roman Kuhar is a sociologist, professor and researcher.

Prof. dr. Roman Kuhar, born in June 1973, holds a PhD in Sociology. He completed his studies at Faculty of Social Sciences in November 1998. He received his Master degree from the same faculty in April 2002 and his PhD in June 2005 with the dissertation "Intimate Citizenship: Private Choices, Public Policies and Everyday Life of Gays and Lesbians".

From 1993 to 2000 he worked as a journalist at Radio Slovenia. Between 1998 and 2001 he worked as a volunteer at the Society for Nonviolent Communication. From 2000 to 2009, he was employed at the Peace Institute as a researcher and co-editor of the Intolerance Monitoring Group Report. During his research position at the Peace Institute, he has participated in a number of European research projects related to gender equality, discrimination, homophobia, citizenship and human rights, including Intimate Citizenship (The Rights to have Rights: Implementing Active Citizenship), Quing (Equality and Gender + Equality Policies) in Citizens in Diversity: A Four-Nation Study on Homophobia and Fundamental Rights. He cooperated with the Peace Institute until 2014, when he became the head of the research program “Problems of Autonomy and Identities in the Time of Globalization” at the Department of Sociology, Faculty of Arts, which he coordinated until 2019.

Between 2005 and 2008, he was a guest lecturer at the European Master’s Degree Program in Human Rights and Democratization at the European Inter-University Center for Human Rights and Democratization in Venice. Between 2007 and 2015, he was the editor of the LGBT-journal Narobe. In 2008, he authored a national report for the European Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA) on social situation regarding homophobia and discrimination based on sexual orientation in EU member states. Between 2011 and 2014, he was also a board member of the European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE). In addition, he was a visiting researcher and guest lecturer at the University of Zagreb (Department of Sociology, Faculty of Arts), the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA, Institute of Sociology, Center for Social Sciences) and the Free University of Brussels (ULB, Faculté de Philosophie et Sciences sociales, L'Institute of Sociology).

Since 2004, he has been working with the Department of Sociology of the Faculty of Arts, where he has been employed since 2009. Since 2007 he has been organizing a summer student symposium in Grožnjan in cooperation with the Faculty of Arts in Zagreb and the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Ljubljana.

In 1998, he received the Faculty Prešeren Award for his BA thesis, which was later published as a book “Mi, drugi” (We, the Others) (Škuc-Lambda, 2001). In 2018, the Council for European Studies - Gender and Sexuality Research Network awarded him the Best Article Award for the article Trans * citizenship and postsocialist societies (published in co-authorship with S. Monroe and J. Takács in Critical Social Policy). In the same year, he also received the Slovenian Research Agency’s Excellence in Science Award for his book Anti-gender campaigns in Europe (co-edited with David Paternotte).

Roman Kuhar is the author of a number of scientific articles and monographs, including Media Representations of Homosexuality (MediaWatch, 2003), At the Crossroads of Discrimination (Peace Institute, 2009), co-author (with A. Švab) of the monograph Unbearable Comfort of Privacy (Peace Institute, 2005) and co-editor (with J. Takács) of the collections “Beyond The Pink Curtain: Everyday life of LGBT people in Eastern Europe” (Peace Institute, 2007), “Doing Families: Gay and Lesbian Family Practices” (Peace Institute, 2011) and (with D. Paternotte) of the Anti-gender campaigns in Europe: Mobilizing against equality (Rowman & Littlefield International, 2017, French translation 2018).

Roman Kuhar is a member of the Slovenian Sociological Association and currently its vice-president, assistant editor at Social Politics (Oxford Journals) and member of the Journal of LGBT youth, European Journal of Politics and Gender, Družboslovne razprave and Socialno delo. In the years 2013-2017 he was the head of the Department of Sociology at the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana, and between 2017-2021 he has been the Dean of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Ljubljana.
