ESREA Active Democratic Citizenship and Adult Learning Network Conference
ESREA Active Democratic Citizenship and Adult Learning (ADCAL) Network Conference will take place at the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana, in Ljubljana, Slovenia, on 23–24 September 2026.
Under the theme “Learning and Practicing Active Democratic Citizenship in the Struggle against Growing Authoritarianism” the conference will bring together practitioners and researchers from different disciplines and places and provide a space for critical reflection, dialogue, and exchange among researchers concerned with adult learning and education, and democratic citizenship in increasingly challenging political and social contexts.

Preparation of presentations
The length of paper presentations should be a maximum of 20 minutes to allow time for discussion. Please bring your presentations on a USB stick.

Special Issue
After the conference, we plan to publish a special issue on the conference theme in the journal Studies in Adult Education and Learning. We thus invite all those who wish to have their conference papers considered for publication to first express their interest by sending an abstract (max. 500 words) to email (Borut.Mikulec@ff.uni-lj.si) by October 1, 2026.
Full papers (8,000 words) should then be submitted by January 7, 2027, through the Open Journal System. In addition to research and conceptual papers, the journal also publishes book reviews. We therefore welcome proposals from those interested in writing a book review related to the conference theme. The journal’s author guidelines are available here.
