The course comprises chapters from the English language and British and American literatures. The latter are allotted at least 80 per cent of the course load. Language: expansion of the students' English vocabulary, including literary terms, through reading unfamiliar texts and learning prepositional phrases, collocations, idioms, proverbs. Literature: (1) the historical development of American literature as illustrated by seminal American writers (the ‘Dark’ Romanticism: E.A. Poe; transition from Romanticism to Realism: E. Dickinson; Southern Gothic: T. Capote; Modernism: T.S. Eliot), (2) ‘typical’ British genres (ghost story: M.R. James, detective story: A.C. Doyle, limerick, nursery rhymes), (3) literary devices (onomatopoeia, punning). By preparing obligatory presentations of works written in English, the students practise reading and speaking English as well as the analysis of literary passages.
