Anthropology of Modern Slovenia

Lectures outline basic concepts (modernity, contemporaneity or postmodernity) and by illustrating crucial transformations of culture and ways of living apply them to Slovenia. Cultural changes, history as well as possibilities and limitations of ethnological and cultural-anthropological research of contemporary ways of living and cultural practices in Slovenia and in the world are therefore discussed. Mass and popular culture as well as selected elements of contemporary, especially material and technology-related culture (print, photography, film, sound media, radio and television, internet) are outlined. From the perspective of lifestyles, subcultures and scenes, selected examples of contemporary consumer practices and popular culture are also discussed.
By students’ participation in project work practicum focuses on a selected phenomenon of contemporary Slovenian society. Students cooperate in the activities of various civil society, cultural, voluntary and other institutions and get to know the diverse media environments.
