Introduction to Japanese music, its historical development and importance in modern Japan.

Overwiev of the traditional Japanese music: religious music (Shinto music, Buddhist music, Christian music), court music (Gagaku), music of no drama (nogaku), music of puppet theater (Gagaku), folk and popular musical arts. The main emphasis will be on the development of Japanese music in the period until Meiji Restoration.
