Introduction to Digital History

This course covers concepts, methods, the theoretical background of, and practical examples in the field of digital history. The course provides foundational knowledge about the use of digital methods and technologies in historical research, in particular: techniques of digitisation, data analysis, and the visualisation of historical sources and historical processes or events.

The course addresses various sub-fields and issues from the broader context of digital history, namely:
- the core concepts and theoretical background of digital history;
- the differences and similarities between historical sources and digital data;
- issues of digital data management (FAIR principles);
- the creation, design, and use of digital bibliographic databases;
- the basics of video production for historical content;
- the use of historical cartography and contemporary methods of terrain mapping;
- the basic techniques of digital genealogy;
- the creation of historical learning paths in a digital environment;
- the techniques of integrating GIS into historical research;
- the applicability and uses of corpus linguistics in historical research;
- the use of digital tools to visualise historical data and research findings and to create digital narratives;
- the usefulness of artificial intelligence and other tools for transcribing manuscripts and printed documents.
