The course examines the general history of the nineteenth-century, with particular emphasis on global demographic, economic, social, and cultural processes such as the demographic revolution; urbanisation (the town–countryside relationship) and migration (forms and directions); the agrarian revolution; proto-industrialisation; the Industrial Revolution; the emergence of national markets and colonial policy; changes in the structure of classes and estates; the development of the bourgeoisie (with particular emphasis on new professions, nineteenth-century bourgeois professional culture, and bourgeois sociability); national movements and the nationalisation of the masses; liberalism and the emergence of mass political parties; women’s political movements; secularisation; and the emergence of antisemitism and racism.

The content is drawn from the broadest framework of the course and considers all major political, social, economic, cultural, and intellectual processes; it is then thematically integrated and developed. In principle, each semester focuses on different thematic units, selected either for their significance within the period or for their contemporary relevance. From a wide range of possible topics: the formation of modern non-dominant nations; a comparison of British, French, and Russian imperialism; the Catholic Church’s responses to the social question in the nineteenth century; the impact of technological change on ways of life; the historical memory of the First World War; etc.
