Open science

Open access to research results is in the interest of the research community, as well as public policymakers, the media, and the broader interested professional public. Open access increases the visibility of research results, and at the same time, this type of publication is consistent with the policy of funding agencies that research results co-funded with public funds must be openly accessible.

Data publication is a publication in a data repository that contains comprehensively documented data, accompanied by bibliographic information and a persistent identifier, and for which a quality review has been conducted.

A domain-specific repository is a repository specialized in storing and providing access to digital objects within a specifically defined scientific field.

Domain-specific repositories offer specialized services that contribute to a higher quality of publications. They employ experts specializing in specific types of data who review the submitted materials. In most cases, they also provide assistance during the planning of data collection, the data collection process itself, and data processing.

There are two national domain-specific data repositories operating in Slovenia:

  • The Slovenian Social Science Data Archives (ADP) is a domain-specific data repository whose mission is to provide data services supporting research, education, and the public interest in the field of social sciences in Slovenia.
  • The CLARIN.SI Repository provides curation and publication of language resources, such as corpora, lexicons, audio and video recordings, grammars, language models, etc.

When searching for and selecting an appropriate domain-specific data repository, researchers can also use the re3data.org or FAIRsharing.org directories.

An institutional repository is a repository managed by an individual institution under its own terms and conditions, providing for the storage of and access to digital objects created by researchers and others conducting research under the auspices of that institution.

The following institutional repositories operate in Slovenia:

A general-purpose repository is a repository that enables the storage of and access to digital objects and is not associated with a specific scientific field or institution.

They are open to everyone, as they do not impose institutional or subject-specific restrictions on users.

They do not perform quality reviews of publications.

An example of an established general-purpose repository in the international context is Zenodo.
