Department of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology

Asst. Prof. Dr. Sandi Abram

I am a cultural anthropologist whose work explores sensory-affective transformations in urban contexts, with a particular focus on urban cultures, atmospheres, memory, and non-institutional creative practices (e.g. street art, graffiti, craft, and tattoos).

My research draws on sensory anthropology, walking methodologies, as well as digital, collaborative, and multimodal ethnography to explore how people experience and shape their environments. In recent years, my work has expanded to include heritage studies, environmental anthropology, the anthropology of the Alps, and multispecies ethnography.

I have participated in several national and international research projects, resulting in publications that examine themes such as sensory gentrification, urban commoning, grassroots solidarity and care, contemporary hunting, and the politics of visual cultures. My recent work has appeared in journals such as Urban Planning, Ethnologia Fennica, Street Art and Urban Creativity Journal, and Traditiones. I have conducted ethnographic fieldwork in Barcelona (Catalonia, Spain), Ljubljana and Solčavsko (Slovenia), and selected micro-locations across the Western Balkans.

Currently, I am an Assistant Professor in the Department of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology.

For mentorship and collaboration in any of the areas outlined above, please feel free to contact me via email.

You can find my work online via ResearchGate, Google Scholar, and COBISS.
