The history of English phonology, morphology and syntax. The Old English phonemic system and its simplification in Middle English. The Great Vowel Shift and other sound changes in Middle English and New English. The nominal paradigm: the origin and history of plural and case endings in nouns, pronouns, adjectives and determiners. Cardinal and ordinal numerals. The verbal paradigm: the origin and history of finite and non-finite forms, irregular, modal and auxiliary verbs. The origin and history of tenses, moods and voices.
