The course on popular culture starts with a set of issues, which present the phenomenon of popular culture in the light of its articulation in the European cultural history. Popular culture is first critically addressed through different theoretical perspectives – from the early theories on popular culture, Frankfurt school, and Marxism, to feminism and post-structural theory – and then the course focuses on the analysis of the contemporary »formats« of popular culture – from its potentials for (fruitless) pleasure to its potentials for resistance through popular culture.
